A SKY IN HIS EYE.
Part 2
Chris was sure that McDermott would catch wind of the incident in the last
town. And he knew it was only a matter of time before he would be there to
get the girl. Time was short and they needed a plan. That night,
Chris walked around the house trying to find the weakness and strengths.
Trying to figure out where would be the best place to defend from, and thinking
of ways to fortify against fire and gunshots. While he was walking, he
came across Vin and Sky he was just out of sight but not out of earshot.
Vin was telling Sky, he didn't want her to be alone with Caleb. He didn't
like the way that Caleb kept looking at her. Sky laughed, she asked him
why? You look at me the same way. Vin denied it with a smile on his
face. He thought, she may be young, but she is wise.
Suddenly, she turned to him and said. "I know you like me a lot.
So I need to ask you a favor. If it gets to the point where we might lose
and that man can get me. You make sure he doesn't get me alive.
I know what his sons did to my mother. She was alive most of the time; I
can still hear her scream. Don't let them do that to me. Please."
With this, Vin pulled Sky towards him and gave her a hug. He ran his
fingers through her hair. She gently sobbed.
Vin replied, "It will never come to that. I won't
let that happen. Don't worry."
He took her face into his hands and kissed her. Gradually, he put his arm
around her neck and kissed her more urgently. She put her arms
around his neck and they stayed in this embrace. Chris felt like a spy looking
at the two.
So Chris made some noise so that the two would know that he was coming.
"You should be inside, little lady", Chris said.
"No need to worry, Chris. I'll take care of
her." Replied Vin.
"You can't. I want you to take the first
watch." Chris said.
Vin gave him a look of objection, but Chris assured him that
he would keep an eye on Sky.
Vin thought, "I want to keep an eye on Sky and a few other things."
Then he went to take cover and watch out for McDermott while Sky went in to
prepare the meal for the men. After the dinner was cleared, Sky took a
plate out to Vin. He thanked her, and smiled when he saw her take a seat.
He couldn't believe she could cook too. Although he knew he should send her
back, he was glad she wanted to stay.
"You should be heading in. It's not safe out here." He
said. Sheepishly hoping she would refuse.
"I feel safer out here with you. I don't know why, I just trust you
the most. Maybe, because you were the first I met after I lost my
family." She said.
"Well, I guess I am your family now." He said. "I always wanted
one of my own. Settle down; raise a family instead of a gun."
"Out hear you can't do one with out the other." She replied.
He smiled. After he finished his dinner he stood next to her making sure that he
could see the trail. He couldn't forget why he was there. Even more
now he had to make sure that nothing happened to her. He had one leg
resting on the boulder she was sitting on. She gently rested her head on
his knee. He ran his fingers through her hair and neither spoke again
until Caleb came to bring her in. As they walked to the house Caleb
grabbed Sky's arm and she
pulled away.
"It was not accident that those men are dead." She said
"What is that supposed to mean." Caleb replied
" Please don't touch me, I don't like it." She retorted.
"You didn't seem to mind being touched by Vin." He said.
"And?"
"What's wrong with me?"
"There's nothing wrong with you. You're not Vin." Then she
walked in the house alone.
Red took the second watch, and Vin went in to get some sleep.
The first thing he did was to check in on Sky. He was amazed to find her
still awake. She saw him and said.
" Now, I can get some rest."
Vin walked into her room.
"Were you waiting for me?"
"Of course I was silly. I was worried about you
out there alone."
He walked over to where she sat and kissed her. She
rose to meet him and urgently kissed him back. Vin pulled away from her
and went to close the door and lock it. He walked towards her and pulled
her into his arms and kissed her again more urgent more insistent.
She realized were this was going and pulled away slightly.
"Vin, I never…"
His kisses silenced her objection. He picked her up and
gently laid her on the bed. She felt that she should fear him, but
looking into his eyes all fears melted away. He started caressing her arms
then her breasts while kissing her lips. He started kissing her cheek then
her neck. She had never felt anything like this before. Her whole
body was hot and she just let him do what he wanted. Slowly Vin started
taking off her clothes. He unbuttoned
her dress and slid it off her shoulders along with her under garments. She
was young and didn't need a corset yet. He was amazed at how beautiful she
was. He bombarded her with kisses all over her exposed flesh and heard her
moan.
He stopped momentarily, and started to disrobe. After
each article of clothing he caressed and kissed Sky, shortly they both lay on
the bed in a lover's embrace. Strong and sure but gently he made her
his woman. After their lovemaking was over, he whispered in her ear
that he would die before he let anyone hurt her. Then they both fell
asleep in each other's arms.
Along with the sunrise, came McDermott and 15 of his men.
Caleb spotted the dust long before they arrived. When he got close,
McDermott sent one of his men to tell them to send out the girl. Chris
answer was unwelcome and the gunfire began. As expected, McDermott's men
encircled the ranch. Bullets came from all directions and were answered.
McDermott's men were going down but Red also went down with a lucky shot.
As the fighting went on, more of McDermott's men ate dirt, but the band of six
had quickly become four. Although Colby was shot, he wasn't dead, but hurt bad
enough he couldn't shoot. Sky kept replaying in her mind, her dad and mom's
deaths. She didn't want anyone else to die. Especially Vin.
She couldn't help her parents, but she could help these men.
" I can't watch you die for me." Said Sky
"What are you saying?" replied Vin.
"I listened to my parents die. I can't stand here
and watch these men kill you." She tearfully said to Vin.
"I think I should give up." She cried.
" I am not letting you go out there and die!
Forget it." Vin replied.
"Do you think I could live with myself if I let a woman
die for me." Caleb said.
"It's too late for that. Don't let Red die in
vain. You can't just give up." Chris retorted.
"Then what are we going to do?" She pleaded.
But it gave Chris an idea. When the shooting died down, McDermott issued a
warning.
"Send out the girl or die."
Chris replied, "We'll lay down our guns, and give
you the girl. She's not worth it."
He told McDermott that all the men with him were dead
but Caleb and that they would come out with the girl unarmed. Chris led
the three. Then Sky came out with her hands under her apron. Caleb followed with
his hands behind his head. Two men came and pushed Chris and
Caleb to the ground. One of the men shouted,
" She's all yours."
McDermott orders one of his men to check out the inside of the ranch.
He looks around and sees three bodies on the floor.
"They all look dead to me!" He shouted.
McDermott told him to check the rest of the house. When the man left the
room Vin quietly followed him and put him out of commission changed clothes with
him and put his hat over his face in order to disguise himself. He was
sure no one would notice all attention would be on Sky and McDermott. He
positioned himself behind the man that held Caleb at gunpoint.
During this time, McDermott looked at Sky, and he couldn't believe that a woman
let alone a half-breed killed his sons. After what seemed like an
eternity. Chris coughed when he saw Vin take up position.
Sky said, "It must really make you feel like a big
man, all these guns after me. But I guess that's the way. It sure is
gonna make you feel so proud to know it took so many men to take one little
girl."
McDermott replied, "I could take you. You're
nothing but half-breed trash."
He took out his gun and slowly took aim, and then Sky fired from underneath her
apron. McDermott went down. The two men behind her also went down,
Vin shot when she shot, and Chris had a knife hidden and threw it at the other. The
rest took off.
One said, "No need to fight now, no way to get the reward."
It was 3 days after they buried the dead they would have to
stay a little while longer while Colby healed. But he wasn't sure if he
and Vin would be going on together. Caleb took off the day before, once he
realized he didn't have a chance with Sky. And Vin, well, He thought about
Vin and Sky as he looked at the two sitting together over on the porch.
They were huddled close; Vin had his arm around her protectively. It
was over for Vin, Chris
was sure of that. Sky might as well reel him in. Maybe they would ride on,
maybe they would settle down, and Chris thought if he could see the future he'd
be a rich man…
